SSK 500GB Portable NVMe External SSD — USB-C 10Gbps Drive
Product description
Capacity reporting: The 500GB model may appear as roughly 465GB on some Windows systems because of the difference between binary and decimal capacity calculations. This does not reflect any loss of physical storage and some platforms, like macOS, can present the full 500GB value.
Performance and interface: The drive uses a USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps) link and can reach up to about 1050 MB/s read and around 1000 MB/s write under optimal conditions. An activity LED shows when the device is busy. Built-in SLC caching reserves roughly one quarter of the current free space as a high-speed buffer to keep transfers steady for workloads that fit in the cache.
Durability and cooling: The enclosure is made from a 2 mm thick aluminum alloy that helps dissipate heat and gives the unit a premium, solid feel. Measured surface temperatures peak around 105.58°F under load, helping the drive run reliably without excessive thermal throttling.
Power and mobile use: With a power draw below 2.4 watts, the SSD can be powered by many modern mobile devices and supports workflows such as 4K60 ProRes capture from compatible iPhones. Note that older devices using the Lightning connector generally cannot supply sufficient power to run the unit.
Maintenance and reliability features: The drive supports S.M.A.R.T. health monitoring and adaptive TRIM functions to optimize block management, sustain write performance and lengthen the device’s usable life.
What’s in the box: The package includes the portable SSD plus both a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-A to USB-C cable to cover current laptops, desktops, tablets and many phones. The drive is extremely light — about 36.6 g — and measures approximately 2.6 × 1.5 × 0.5 inches, making it easy to carry on trips or in a pocket.
Pros
- High sustained NVMe speeds over USB 3.2 Gen2
- Compact, lightweight aluminum housing for cooling
- Includes USB-C and USB-A cables for wide compatibility
Cons
- Windows capacity readout may show ~465GB
- Older Lightning-only devices can’t power it
- Performance depends on host and file sizes (cache limits)
VerdictThis pocket-sized NVMe SSD delivers very fast transfers and broad device compatibility thanks to included USB-C and USB-A cables and USB 3.2 Gen2 support. It includes health monitoring and TRIM support to maintain write performance, SLC caching to smooth large transfers, and a lightweight aluminum enclosure to help manage heat. Power draw is low enough for many phones, including support for iPhone

Perfect physical size
Exactly the size I wanted. Setup was confusing at first because instructions weren’t clear, but once I found the files it worked fine. Speed is decent for my needs and it frees up phone space.

Impressive first impressions
Just unboxed and happy so far. Extremely compact for a 1TB device. On my Mac Studio (APFS) I see around 800 MB/s with a disk test. Too new to judge longevity, but initial speeds are promising.

Tiny travel movie library
I loaded movies on the 1TB version for trips. It plugs into my iPhone Pro Max with USB-C and shows up in Files so I can stream without using phone storage. Very compact and well made. Note: Lightning-only devices won’t power it.

Handy little test drive
Compact drive that does what it’s supposed to. I use it for portable file testing. It arrived with both USB-C to C and USB-A to C cables, which was useful.

Strange file transfer issue
Reads and writes quickly, but I encountered odd behavior copying photos: some files vanish or appear as empty files. Very strange and concerning.

A welcome replacement
My older Japanese HDD died after five years so IT recommended this. It arrived on schedule and transfers felt noticeably faster than the old drive. No local-language manual, but it’s plug-and-play and has plenty of capacity for daily work.
