SanDisk Extreme 2TB Portable SSD — High-Speed Rugged External Drive
Product description
The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is a small NVMe external drive built to move large files quickly and survive daily travel. This 2TB model provides high-capacity storage in a pocket-sized enclosure and is intended for backing up projects, freeing device space, or carrying working media between systems.
Performance: Read throughput is advertised up to 2000MB/s; write speeds are lower and will change depending on host hardware, connection type, and workload. Internal testing indicates you can transfer around 1,000 high-resolution photos in under a minute under ideal conditions. Sustained heavy writes may raise case temperature and affect performance.
Durability and design: The housing is compact and designed to be rugged — IP65-rated for resistance to water spray and limited dust intrusion and tested to tolerate drops from up to about 3 meters. The drive is small enough to fit in pockets and small camera bags, making it convenient for location work.
Security and compatibility: The drive supports 256‑bit AES password protection via downloadable SanDisk software (Windows 10+ and macOS v12+ supported). The encryption utility requires a separate download; use of that feature is optional. Note: 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes; actual available capacity is lower.
Package and notes: The product ships with the portable SSD and the required USB-C cable for connection to hosts that support USB 3.2/USB-C. Performance varies by device, interface, and usage. Warranty registration and other terms may apply. Specifications and visuals are subject to change by the manufacturer.
Pros
- Very fast read performance up to 2000MB/s
- IP65 water and dust resistance with drop protection
- Optional 256‑bit AES password encryption
Cons
- Can run warm under prolonged heavy writes
- Write speeds are lower than read speeds
- Encryption requires separate software download
VerdictA compact, durable NVMe-based portable SSD that delivers very fast read performance (up to 2000MB/s), splash and dust resistance, and hardware encryption support. It’s well suited for photographers, videographers, and mobile workflows, though write speeds vary by host device and sustained writes can raise temperatures.

Good quality but now overpriced
Build quality is solid, but the cost went up dramatically — I think it's too expensive now.

Works well for car camera storage
Using it in my Tesla to store camera footage; it's handled heat so far. I keep cabin temperature below 100°F.

Casing appears slightly bowed — normal?
Performs well with my ATEM switcher for ISO recording. However the casing isn't flat — it bulges slightly. Should I worry about this shape? Has anyone else seen the same?

Primary storage for action-camera clips
Bought the 2TB model to store Insta360 footage (4TB wasn't cost-effective). It handles editing without issues. I keep backups on a separate external HDD.

Overheats in extreme humidity
Writes quickly, but overheats after about 10 minutes. Not usable in Florida summers.
