SFX-31271 2 oz Fixative Concentrate — Pastel Fixative
Product description
What you receive: a 2 ounce bottle of concentrated fixative solution. The product is supplied as the concentrate only; a spray bottle is not included.
Materials and origin: the formula is manufactured in the United States and is intended to be combined with a clear, high‑proof alcohol (for example, grain alcohol or similar) before use. The concentrate itself is a liquid that must be diluted for spraying.
How to use: pour the concentrate into a clean spray reservoir and mix with a high‑proof clear alcohol to the desired ratio, then apply in very light, even passes. Allow the alcohol to evaporate between coats and keep the paper flat or supported while drying to limit warping. The manufacturer reports that the product minimally alters pastel value and does not shift hue when applied correctly.
Size and dimensions: the bottle measures approximately 3.6" long by 1.35" wide by 1.35" high and contains 2 ounces (concentrated form) for mixing into multiple spray applications.
Pros
- Low odor, non toxic formula when diluted properly
- Preserves tonal value and color fidelity
- Small concentrate allows custom mixing ratios
Cons
- Sold without a sprayer — you must provide your own
- Requires high‑proof clear alcohol for dilution
- Can darken or warp paper if applied too heavily
VerdictThis 2 oz fixative concentrate delivers a low‑odor, non toxic option for sealing pastels and pencil work when mixed with a suitable clear alcohol and applied in light coats. It preserves color and tonal value well, though proper mixing and careful application are important to avoid paper warp or darkening. Recommended for artists who want a controlled, safer fixative solution.

Very effective and odorless
This concentrate sealed my pastels without a chemical smell. I reached out with a usage question and the company replied quickly and helpfully. Pleasant customer service and a product that performed well.

Holds values on chalk pastels
I mixed 91% alcohol with about a 7:1 ratio in a small mister and sprayed twice with drying time between coats. Lights and darks remained distinct on chalk pastels from major brands. For oil pastels I still prefer a hardware clear lacquer to harden the surface.

No spotting or color shifts
Applied as a spray, it held the pastel without leaving marks or altering colors. Works well for preserving soft pastel pieces.

Mixed results — watch the ratio
I missed that no sprayer was included. I used Everclear and mixed about 1:7–1:8. The solution looked cloudy and after two coats some midtones deepened and a few lighter areas shifted. I had to rework parts of the drawing to balance tones.

Gentle and safe to use
There isn’t a harsh chemical smell like aerosol sprays. It set my pastel painting without changing the hues and felt like a safer alternative.

Safe for indoors and it delivers, with care
I used it on graphite on smooth 74 lb paper. I mixed with clear alcohol and applied light coats. Spray lightly, allow evaporation, keep the paper flat, and consider pressing flat afterward. It isn’t workable after two coats; it truly fixes the surface. Try slightly different dilution ratios to suit your needs.

Fixes pastel without toxic fumes
I’m pleased with the results. It set the pastel and was not stinky or toxic when used as directed.
