Codenames: Back to Hogwarts — Harry Potter Themed Board Game
Product description
Players begin the game as first-year students divided into two rival houses; each side chooses a prefect who acts as the clue-giver. On a turn, the prefect announces one word and a number to indicate how many cards on the shared grid relate to that hint. Teammates discuss and touch cards they believe match; selecting an opposing house card, a dead end, a locked door, or another obstacle ends the turn. If a player reveals the groundskeeper Filch, the game ends immediately and that house loses.
The box supports multiple ways to play: there are word-only cards, picture-only cards, and mixed setups so groups can tailor the experience. Each house also accesses two distinct special abilities that meaningfully modify the standard Codenames rules, offering new tactical layers—these powers can shift how clues are interpreted and which plays are worth the risk.
Components include full-color cards printed on sturdy, thick cardstock, cardboard tokens and house markers, a set of key cards to show which grid positions belong to each team, and a concise rulebook that walks players through setup and the special house mechanics. The cards are standard playing-card dimensions to make shuffling and handling comfortable, and the box stores neatly for table-top sessions. Setup is quick: lay out the grid, assign houses, give each prefect their screen and key, and begin giving clues.

We tried this during a family evening with young adults and found it easy to learn. The rulebook is clear and the extra layers on top of classic Codenames add nice variety. The pieces feel higher quality than many party games, and it was fun spotting familiar locations and characters.

Absolutely loved it!
We had a blast! Even players who aren't deep fans of the series enjoyed it, and Potter enthusiasts were thrilled. Picked up other themed versions after trying this one — it hooked a friend who usually avoids board games.

Polished look and smart tweaks
The presentation moves away from the original Cold War aesthetic into something more magical, and the materials feel premium. The rule tweaks are thoughtful and the core mechanics remain easy to pick up.

Great for fans, okay otherwise
If you know the books and films you'll get a lot from the references. Folks unfamiliar with the universe might find some clues tricky, but the underlying game is still enjoyable for those who like word-guessing challenges.

Codenames with clever Potter twists
Longtime Codenames fans will recognize the core play but the house abilities and mixed word/picture decks give fresh decisions. Our family enjoys cooperative and team-based word games, and the Potter tie-ins made this version especially appealing.
