Outdoor
Rothco Map & Document Case — Weather-Resistant Map Carrier
Product description
Constructed from durable nylon with a clear plastic viewing panel, this map and document case is built for outdoor and travel use. The package includes the main nylon carrier plus two removable zip-lock storage sleeves for added moisture protection.
The exterior is weather-resistant to shield contents from rain and light snow, while the transparent lining lets you read maps without removing them. Built-in drainage grommets allow water to escape rather than pool inside the carrier.
It accepts folded maps and standard printer-sized sheets and folds compactly for stowing on a pack or belt. The clear cover tolerates grease or alcohol markers and the zipper runs smoothly for repeated field use. Imported and designed to be lightweight and portable, it’s intended to keep documents safe on day hikes, travel, and other outdoor activities.
Pros
- Lightweight and packable
- Clear viewing panel for on-the-go reading
- Includes two protective zip-lock sleeves
Cons
- Not submersion-proof
- Clear panel may crease over time
- Back fabric is not fully waterproof
VerdictA useful, lightweight sleeve for keeping paper maps and documents tidy and protected from light moisture. It’s not sealed for submersion, but the clear window, dual zip-lock bags, and drainage grommets give solid everyday protection for outdoor use. Good for casual navigation and pack storage, though not ideal if you need absolute waterproofing or full-size topo compatibility.

Feels like an expedition accessory
Used it in France — gives a fun explorer vibe and I enjoyed using it.

Worked well for my training
Perfect for my Pathfinder course needs and stayed functional throughout the training and after.

Not a waterproof solution
I thought it would be waterproof but grommets let water in. The supplied ziplocs are what actually keep items dry. Good for tear protection, not for heavy weather.

Clear panel loses clarity after folding
Not thrilled — the transparent face feels cheap. After a few days the fold lines clouded and made the map hard to read unless removed. No holes yet, but it seems headed that way. Acceptable for the price but not high-grade.

Water-resistant and easy to carry
I like that it resists water even though my maps are laminated. It folds small and I can stash it on my person until I need it.

Too small and not waterproof for serious use
I dislike this case. It’s best for casual yard use, not remote navigation. Size is misleading — heavy folding needed for USGS or MGRS maps. The included zip bags have vent holes to help them lie flat, which also let water in. Clear cover is flexible and marker-friendly; zipper is decent. Back fabric offers little water resistance.

Solid, simple map carrier
Quality seemed fine to me. I don't plan to dunk my maps, so the tiny holes people mention aren’t a concern.

Liked it, but too small for full topo maps
I like it overall, but disappointed that it won’t really fit a full 1:50,000 topo without excessive folding.

Compact, light, good for fieldwork
Great for search-and-rescue. Came with two plastic sleeves, folds neatly and clips to my pack. Be careful where you clip it — it can slide off. Only one side is visible, but it fits letter-size paper and held extra documents dry in light rain.

Keeps my maps dry in weather
Hate soggy maps and smeared ink — this case keeps them dry in rain and snow. Not meant for full submersion, but it performs as intended.
