Monoprice Sound Block Passive DI Box — Ground Lift & Pad (Stage Right)
Product description
This unit is a passive direct box designed to convert an unbalanced instrument signal to a balanced mic-level output for long cable runs to a mixing console.
The enclosure is constructed from heavy 14-gauge steel for road-ready durability and impact resistance. Controls include a ground-lift switch to help eliminate hum caused by ground loops, and a multi-position attenuation/pad to reduce hot signals before they reach the mixer. The design employs bidirectional impedance matching via a passive transformer to maintain signal integrity between instrument-level and mic-level circuits.
Connections are provided for instrument input and thru (¼-inch) and a balanced XLR output to feed consoles or audio interfaces. Because it is passive, the unit requires no batteries or phantom power. Its compact footprint is suitable for use on pedalboards, in studio racks, or as a stage insert when a rugged, simple DI is needed.
Pros
- Robust 14-gauge steel construction
- Passive operation—no power needed
- Ground-lift and selectable attenuation
Cons
- Quarter-inch jacks may feel tight at first
- Passive design may not suit all piezo pickups
- Fewer features than an active DI
VerdictA solid, no-frills passive DI that delivers reliable, quiet balanced output for stage and studio use. The heavy-gauge steel housing and simple controls (ground lift and multi-step pad) make it a practical choice when you need a rugged, power-free interface between instruments and mixing consoles. Expect dependable performance for magnetic pickups and most line-level sources; piezo pickups or sourc

Does what it should
Straightforward and functional. No surprises—just gets the job done.

Not recommended
I wouldn’t advise buying this. For the same investment you can find active DI alternatives with better performance for piezo or picky sources.

Reliable and noise-free on gigs
I use these live and they’ve been trouble-free. Well-built and they perform consistently night after night.

Works perfectly
Performs as expected. Built solidly and includes -20/-40/0 dB attenuation options which add flexibility.

Failed to deliver for passive pickups
I tested two units for split DI signals before pedals and amps and found them unsuitable for magnetic pickups—the sound was quiet and distorted. Piezo sources were thin as well. A buffered pedal in front fixes it, but out of the box they didn’t meet my needs.

Unglamorous but effective
Direct boxes aren’t flashy, and this one is typical of that. It works reliably—either it passes signal or it doesn’t—and this one passes.

Does the job, with a faint hum
Performs its basic role, though I noticed a slight hum in one setup. Still a practical solution when you need a DI quickly.

Handy studio backup
Grabbed this when our studio DI failed and it worked straight away. Tough build and the ground lift/attenuator behaved as expected. Not a boutique unit, but it solved the problem and is worth having spares on hand.

Cleared up unwanted hiss
Did exactly what I needed—removed small hisses and static in my chain. Simple and effective.

Dependable—buy a few for backups
After losing a pricier unit, these proved surprisingly solid. They feel well-made and have been rock-steady in service. I bought two and they’ve held up well.

Surprisingly solid and quiet for a passive unit
Very impressed with the heft and silence of this passive DI. I expected noise but it stayed dead quiet, and the ground-lift and pad functions worked cleanly. The 1/4" sockets were a little stiff, but that may ease with use. Great value for a simple passive DI.
