Akai MPK Mini IV — 25-Key USB-C MIDI Keyboard Controller (Grey)
Product description
The Akai MPK Mini IV is a compact MIDI keyboard controller built for modern music makers. The hardware includes 25 velocity-sensitive mini keys (Gen-3 keybed) designed for piano-style lines and synth leads, plus dedicated true pitch and modulation wheels for expressive performance. The chassis is lightweight and durable, made from a robust molded shell that’s easy to carry between sessions.
For hands-on control the unit provides eight assignable 360° encoders, an intuitive push/turn encoder and a vibrant full-color display that lets you navigate presets, parameters and DAW functions without constantly looking at a computer. The front panel also houses eight RGB backlit MPC-style pads that respond to both velocity and pressure for finger-drumming, clip launching and sample triggering.
Software and connectivity are part of the package. The MPK Mini IV ships with the Studio Instrument Collection — a virtual instrument and standalone suite that offers over 1,000 professional-grade drums, keys, synths, basses and effects from AIR, Akai Professional and Moog — plus ready-to-use templates and DAW mappings to shorten setup time. It is pre-mapped for common hosts like Ableton Live Lite, Logic Pro and FL Studio to get you producing quickly.
Performance features include an arpeggiator with Pattern, Freeze and Mutate options, along with Chord and Scale modes to spark new ideas and speed up composition. For connection flexibility the controller uses USB-C for power and data, includes a full-size MIDI Out for external gear and supports plug-and-play operation with Mac, PC and mobile devices. NKS compatibility and expanded transport/DAW controls mean it integrates with software and hardware rigs with minimal configuration.

Fantastic investment for portability
This was the smartest purchase I made for on-the-go production. Size is ideal and software compatibility is broad — plug in, install the instrument suite and you’re ready to play.

Powerhouse for scoring and deep DAW use
I use this mainly with Cubase for scoring family videos and it integrates well once you set up a template. Some libraries need extra attention but the quick-learn plus a single template setup had me ready fast. The Studio Instrument Collection is enormous — almost too many options — so pick a focus and learn that first.

Great space-saving solution
I needed a small controller to fit on a crowded desk and this worked perfectly. Key feel is solid and you can adjust velocity curves. There are features I’ll rarely use, but the overall package makes composing easy.

Compact controller that actually performs
Keys are snappy, pads and knobs are responsive, and the bundled software adds a lot of creative options. The arpeggiator and freeze functions make jamming fun; it feels far more capable than a basic DAW controller.

Excellent value for a first dedicated controller
I hadn’t used Akai before but this caught my eye for its feature set. Compact but loaded: pitch/mod wheels, arpeggiator, octave/velocity controls, 8 pads and 8 knobs. The programmable pad functions and CC mapping in the editor let you tailor it to your DAW workflow.

Gift worked out fine
I gave this as a present; the recipient hasn’t had any issues, so it appears to be a reliable pick.

Meaningful upgrade over previous minis
Replacing the old joystick with real pitch and mod wheels makes it far more playable. The keybed feels more responsive, pads are punchy, and it stays portable. Downsides remain: mini keys are tight for big hands and the shell is mostly plastic, but overall it’s a major step forward.

USB-C makes setup easy
Needed a little extra setup for GarageBand, but once the script ran it worked well. USB-C power and connectivity are reliable.

Well built with intuitive front-panel editing
The unit feels solid and the keys, pads, wheels and knobs respond nicely. You can configure pads and controls directly from the front without software and save user presets. Labels and the Shift functions make editing clear; the manual walks through the steps. It also arrives with a sizeable software bundle.

A noticeable leap from other compact controllers
After moving from another mini controller, this feels like a generational jump. The arpeggiator and chord modes are handy, menus are straightforward, and the wheels outperform sliders. Key action is consistent and the unit strikes a good balance between sturdy and travel-friendly.
