Construction and features
The set is HO gauge and built with die-cast and molded plastic components to reproduce the Polar Express styling. The locomotive and tender include LED lighting and knuckle couplers. The unit is fitted with a maintenance-free motor and a RailSounds RC sound system housed in the tender, providing steam, horn, bell and spoken announcements drawn from the Polar Express theme.
Control options and compatibility
You can operate the train with the included LionChief remote, over Bluetooth using a compatible mobile device, or through traditional DCC or DC transformers. A switch on the locomotive provides toggles for background ambiance, horn, bell, PA-style announcements and steam effects. The set is HO compatible with a stated minimum curve radius of 18", and the complete set layout measures roughly 44" long when assembled as intended.
Power and age guidance
The LionChief remote requires three AAA batteries, which are not supplied. The set includes a 12V DC power supply for track power. Manufacturer guidance suggests this set is best for ages 14 and older to ensure safe and satisfying operation of the detailed model.
Pros
- Authentic locomotive detail with RailSounds and LED lighting
- Multiple control methods: LionChief remote, Bluetooth, DCC/DC
- Complete starter layout with locomotive, passenger cars and accessories
Cons
- Included magnetic track can misalign and cause derailments
- Some users report intermittent Bluetooth or remote connectivity
- Remote requires three AAA batteries; not suitable for very young children
VerdictThis Lionel Polar Express LionChief HO set delivers an authentic-looking 2-8-4 locomotive with convincing sounds, LED lighting and multiple control options (LionChief remote, Bluetooth app, DCC/DC). The rolling stock is detailed and heavy enough to run smoothly on well-aligned track. However, the supplied magnetic track can present alignment and contact problems that lead to occasional derailments

Nice set, haven’t had space to run it
Very attractive and well made, but I haven’t put it on the layout yet—the supplied oval is too large for our dining table. I’m trusting the Lionel reputation and will run it when I can make room.

Fun gift but fragile for little kids
Really neat set. Bought it for my 3- and 6-year-old; they loved it but fought over it and one car ended up broken. Better suited as a present for older children who will handle it gently.

Perfect running set for my husband
Bought as a gift and was worried after reading reviews, but it runs flawlessly for us. My husband loves it. We used track we already owned and haven’t had problems.

Bluetooth drops causing random stops
Frequent losses of Bluetooth connection with the remote or app cause the train and sounds to halt randomly. Track mode runs more continuously but loses the RailSounds and can be prone to derailment on tight curves. Replacing remote batteries didn’t help; the disconnects seem intermittent and hard to reproduce.

Good engine; track and bell issues
The locomotive is the strong point, but the magnetic track felt unreliable; I preferred other snap-fit track and power supplies. I had several derailments until I ran the set on fully level ground and shortened the train. The bell on the nose arrived loose and detached, which was disappointing since the bell sounds are key to the experience.

Missing track pieces on delivery
Arrived without several track components, including the section that connects to the power regulator. Very disappointing — I had been waiting to set this up for my son and the missing parts ruined the experience.

Do not recommend — frequent derailing and shutdowns
This felt like a scam. The train derailed constantly and seemed to lose electrical contact on the track, causing it to stop repeatedly. The problem looks like a design or manufacturing issue with the track, and it appears to be common across sets.

Good looks, average track and sound quality
The magnetic track works best on perfectly flat surfaces; rugs can create raised joins and cause derailments. The cars look great for an entry set, but the speaker has some static and scratchiness that feels below the level expected for this brand. Also watch the front plastic wheels — they can be finicky.

Excellent locomotive, supplied track is weak
Locomotive and cars are heavy, sharply detailed and ride true when the rails line up. The remote pairs instantly and the sound package brings the theme to life. Setup was quick, but the magnetic track sections sometimes misalign at the joins and can cause small derailments. I plan to swap in sturdier HO track.
